Description

To help people experiencing homelessness, we need to help them feel welcome, safe, and seen. But if our response to homelessness isn’t responsive to the cultures of those we seek to serve, our clients won’t feel welcome, safe, and seen. This course will examine the practice of cultural humility in working with people experiencing homelessness. This course is designed for anyone who works or would like to work with people experiencing homelessness.

Anyone enrolled in any Center for Learning course is invited to a live online office hour every month. Some office hours are opportunities to ask questions about material in our courses; others focus on emerging issues or specific populations.

We offer a variety of discounts: see our FAQ page. Questions? Email learning@naeh.org.

Objectives

Your goals in this course will be to learn how to adopt a cultural humility mindset and approach in your work with people experiencing homelessness. We’ll also talk about how to identify barriers to a cultural humility approach and strategies to overcome them.

I know that within myself that I am familiar with everyone's culture and I don't try and act like I do. I know that working with my White counter parts when they act like they know and understand Black people, N0 you don't so get out of my face with that BS. Ever time I take these trainings sometimes it brings out the worst in me. I don't they the trainings for LGBTQ population and all these other trainings on how to work with other cultures which I am ok with because I know who I am. So I just ask them when are you going to have a training on how to work with Black people. We the trainer had the nerve to say maybe if you can find some information on topics that we could present. So I told her that's your job and no I will not. I told her to put her research and however she got her information then put that energy in finding a curriculum for them to learn about working with us because I know how to work with people in general, been working in this field for 25 years. Never heard back from her, not surprised.

I appreciated the combination of videos from very educated and thoughtful people, and videos breaking the concepts down into easier ways to follow the material.
